OUR WHY

The world’s changing faster than ever before.
It’s time for education to catch up.

Our young people need a different system

Our education system is leaving too many young people frustrated, disconnected, and unprepared for the opportunities and challenges of today and tomorrow.

To take on this dynamic world, kids need deeper support, opportunities to explore their interests, and learning that lights them up. They need real-world experience, connections for equity, and the chance to contribute to their communities as they develop.

As a nation, we can choose to build a more modern, equitable system that delivers on these needs, works for all young people, and protects the vital benefits of public education.

The Good News Is…

A growing movement of educators and innovators, within and outside the current system, aren’t waiting for change. Around the country, they’ve been implementing a radically different approach for years.

Learner-Centered Education •

Learning is impactful
because it’s meaningful.

Instead of standardized curricula, educators tap into the natural curiosity of learners of all ages to build skills and knowledge through projects and experiences relevant to their interests.

Learning is meaningful
because it’s personal.

Instead of a “one size fits all” approach, learning is tailored to the needs and development of the individual, and measured by core competencies over time.
Learning is meaningful
because it’s personal.

Learning is personal
because it’s interconnected.

Instead of being “stuck in school,” learning happens throughout, with, and for the community, in real-world situations with a diverse group of peers and adults.

From Pockets of Possibility to Reality for All Kids

To make learner-centered education available to all young people, we must look beyond what we know as “school” to create a better, more equitable design for public education: community-based, learner-centered ecosystems.

Community-based, learner-centered ecosystems are alternative designs for public K–12 education that leverage the people, partners, and power of each community to support every child through their unique learning journey.

In these systems, learning lives everywhere in the physical and digital world. The community becomes the classroom, the lab, the library, and the playground of learning—in collaboration with a robust network of credentialed adults, businesses, and civic organizations—to help young people reach their full potential.
