Turning Learner-Centered Ecosystems into a Public Education Reality
Invention in Action
We ignite and fuel ground-level R&D efforts for a new, modern education system—one that honors the uniqueness of each child and diversity within each community, embraces connection, and leverages the beautiful reality that learning lives everywhere. Many local communities are poised for such invention, but can’t do it alone. We work with communities to align around a shared vision, mobilize the partners, marshal the resources, and identify the conditions to enable ecosystem development, with an eye toward equity, systemic adaptability, sustainability, and spread at a national level.
- Learner-Centered Ecosystem Lab
- We are catalyzing and supporting waves of learner-centered ecosystem pilots in communities across the country—a vital step toward the development of a new public education approach grounded in ecosystems.
- Research
- We are investigating and disseminating insights about ecosystem design, implementation, and impact to inform future ecosystem pilots and feed into a roadmap for their ability to equitably spread nationwide.
- Policy and Conditions Work
- We are identifying and amplifying the full spectrum of policies and conditions needed for the R&D of ecosystems and for their development, spread, and flourishing throughout the United States.
- Fundraising
- We invite funders to join in this mission to bring learner-centered ecosystems to life and invest in an affirming, proactive possibility for the future of public education, today. This financial support fuels not only our work but that of the field to design the systems, infrastructure, and ground-level initiatives to invent an equitable, modern public education system, rooted in learners and their communities.

The Big Idea
What are community-based, learner-centered ecosystems? They are reconceived public education system designs aligned with how people develop, learn, and grow. Consequently, they are more connected and responsive. Explore these resources to learn more and envision a world where ecosystems flourish and thrive.
Ecosystems Lexicon
This technical document clarifies key terms and components of community-based, learner-centered ecosystems. The lexicon is ever-evolving through application and resulting insights. We invite you to utilize it to gain a deeper understanding of ecosystems and to fuel conversations for a new future of education in your community.
Designed to Thrive Microsite
This is a guide for those leaning in, striving for, and working to invent learner-centered ecosystems in their communities. This guide emerged from a group of forty diverse practitioners, experts, systems thinkers, and young people brought together to imagine a future of thriving learner-centered ecosystems and generate frameworks and insights to support on-the-ground invention.
Policy and Conditions Report
Creating thriving public learner-centered environments and ecosystems requires not only a mindset shift, but an understanding of the existing state policies and conditions that can be leveraged to enable these systems to emerge by learner-centered leaders and practitioners. In this report, we offer examples from our comprehensive landscape analysis of state-level policies and conditions that support learner-centered design and creation.
